week in review

Here’ something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, both for my own sake, and for anyone who is interested in what type of activity there is in my studio and my life as a composer and music producer.

So on Friday’s, I’ll try my very best at doing a little recap of the week.

This week has been dominated by two different theatre opening nights. Pippi and Little Shop of Horrors.

I’ve produced the music for Pippi at Fyllingsdalen Teater, and I am running the sound at Little Shop of Horrors at Cornerteateret. LSOH was a fun challenge, I came in very late in the process and had about two days to learn the show and the mixing desk. Thankfully I had help from a great guy at Bright Group (live sound superpros) at the first day!!

Thomas Valeur had to sessions in the studio this week, he is almost done with the recording of a new project, similar to this one.

I’ve also started on scoring a documentary film, and in the following week’s updates you’ll hear much more about that 🙂

And I also had a meeting with the awesome and cool folks at the theatre group Kompani Krapp. I’ll be writing music for a new project they are starting, which will be so much fun 🙂

Heidi Lambach and Chris Lund was also in the studio this week, and we did some really fun and experimental/ambient recordings.

And… not sure if I should include all the things I SHOULD have done this week but didn’t have time for.. but I really need to plan some “office” hours next week 🙂

Showtime

I’ve directed another choir concert. Fun times. The concept for this concert with Fyllingsdalskoret is “Soundtrack of Life”, and the concert takes you from the 70s up until today. We follow the life of the character Tone, and perform the songs that are important to her at various stages in her life.

My job has been director/choreographer. A fun task for this show with 70-80 singer, 4 dancers and a band. The first concert/show is tonight, April 4th.

Moving into a new studio

I’ m moving into a new studio. I’m still part of Peak Studiofellesskap (peak studio community), but now I’ve moved into a larger studio a few steps down the hall from where I used to work.

The room is a little larger than it appears in the picture, the sofa is pulled forward quite a bit…  I’ll make a new “tour of my studio” video soon. Uhm… nothing really spectacular or unusal going on here. The room is still mainly for me composing, but now with much more space for collaborators and co-writers etc. Yay. And There’s a medium sized vocal booth connected to this studio. That’s the booth where all the City of Friends episodes have been dubbed to Norwegian, and we do all kinds of other voice recording there as well for commercials and stuff.

Me olde and lovely Roland XP-30 is still my main keyboard controller. Not sure about the ergonomics of having it to the side of me… I’ll experiment with some other positions later. 3 screens, two preamps, a lynx aurora firewire is my AD/DA, and there’s a surround monitor controller… it never seizes to amaze the messy massive masses of cables you need to connect just a handful pieces of gear. Fortunately I’ve been promised some expert help to sort out a better cable management system.

Done?

After spending the morning and up until lunch at rehearsals for the family musical Kaptein Knurr – http://www.kapteinknurr.no/ – (I play the part of Fishtrader Fishguts), I spent the rest of the day in the studio… and…. I _think_ I might be done with all the score music for the Lillehammer City of Friends show. – http://vennebyen.no/news/se-vennebyen-live – woohoo 🙂
The show opens on Monday, so I’ve mentally prepared myself to sit all weekend and Monday morning doing fixes, tweaks and adjustments on the show.
Right now the show is almost exactly 30 minutes long, and I’ve composed around 14 minutes of new “score” music for it.

I also got around to squeezing in around 30 minutes of work on the new song with Linn Kat… this song will make your walk-man happy 🙂 Linn kat is back in the studio Tuesday to record some vocals etc… so maybe, just maybe I’ll post a little clip of the song here around Wednesday 🙂

A day in the studio

Early today was all about an upcoming “mini” musical of City of Friends (www.cityoffriends.tv) that will be playing in Lillehammer starting next week. I am writing all the “dramatic” music in the show, and one song I’ve produced is also in the show.
This is a fun warm-up for me, this fall I am starting writing the music for a huge musical/stage-show of City of Friends. This will be the biggest stage production in Europe when it is done! So the writing and production of the music for the grande show will be the focus of this blog 🙂 And in between I’ll post updates and videos from all the rest of the things I do in my little studio.
At around late lunch’ish today, a songwriter colleague popped by. Linn Kat and I are working on some songs, and today an 80s style pop tune was the focus. It might be slightly presentable sometime next week 🙂
